Loose or misadjusted linkage can prevent full engagement even if the transfer case is fine.
When to use this guide: Shifter moves but 4WD does not feel engaged.
If the shifter moves but 4WD doesn't actually engage, check the linkage rod first, it's free to fix and it's the cause more often than people expect. The rod connecting the floor lever to the transfer case can slip, stretch, or go out of adjustment without any obvious sign. Get under it and look before you start worrying about the transfer case itself.
