Coolant filter: when it helps and when it is overkill

A coolant filter can catch debris in older systems, but it needs maintenance.

When to use this guide: You see rust, junk, or repeat cooling system issues.

Overview

After 20 or 30 years, the inside of a Cherokee cooling system can look like rusty soup. A coolant filter catches that debris before it clogs the heater core or restricts the radiator passages. It's worth adding on a high-mileage rig, but it's not a set-and-forget item. Check it every time you do a coolant flush or it can restrict flow on its own.
