If the shifter suddenly feels too easy, something may have slipped or broken.
When to use this guide: Shifter moves smoothly with little resistance and 4WD does not engage.
If the transfer case shifter suddenly moves way too easily and 4WD stops working at the same time, the linkage rod has probably popped off its connection at the transfer case. It's a quick look from underneath and requires no parts to fix if that's the problem. One of the most common 4WD complaints on the XJ and one of the easiest to resolve.
