Runs hot at idle: fan airflow checks (electric fan and fan clutch)

Idle overheating is often an airflow problem, not a mystery thermostat problem.

When to use this guide: Temps climb sitting still or moving slowly.

Overview

If it runs fine on the highway but overheats sitting in traffic, the fan is the problem, not the thermostat. At highway speed, ram air does the cooling. At idle, you're relying entirely on the fan. A slipping mechanical fan clutch is the most common cause. Grab the fan blade by hand with the engine cold, if it spins freely, the clutch is done.
